At a fundamental level, America’s strategic pivot to Asia hinges on closer ties with a stronger Japan. Join us to begin a high-level dialogue on how these two allies should redefine their relations, with particular emphasis on economic issues. Washington has welcomed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s drive to stimulate growth and emerge, at last, from the lost decades. Economic vitality is critical to a more assertive Japan, which many U.S. policy-makers desire as a counterbalance to China. At the same time, Washington must help defuse Japanese-Chinese territorial tensions, help thaw ties between Tokyo and Seoul and resolve emerging friction between the Abe and Obama administrations. Our panel of three eminent experts will explore how to reshape and strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance amid a variety of regional challenges.
