Synopsis
The Takano Pharmacy stands near a railway line in a residential Tokyo neighborhood. Carrying on after the death of her husband, Ginko runs the small pharmacy with the help of her daughter Koharu, and Kinuyo, her mother-in-law. Both the mother and daughter are beauties and an admiration to all. Koharu is not happy about leaving her mother to care both for Kinuyo and to run the pharmacy alone, but there is nothing to be done. Who should show up at Koharu’s wedding, but Ginko’s younger brother Tetsuro. He is a complete oddball in the family, an unsuccessful comedy actor whose day job is selling fried octopus, leaving Ginko’s relatives-to-be extremely dubious. Paying no heed, Tetsuro sits by Ginko in high spirits, lost in his admiration of Koharu in her wedding dress. His horrifying behavior gets worse as he starts drinking and starts a rather inappropriate entertainment. That night, Ginko goes to apologize to her new in-laws, who have shown their displeasure to Tetsuro’s attitude made extremely clear. The next morning, Ginko urges the hung-over Tetsuro to abandon his dreams of stardom and devote himself to a proper job and to hold a family. He tells her how moved he is, as she is the only one who is concerned about him, and with that puts Tokyo behind him and returns to Osaka.
