This photo exhibition introduces the contemporary photography of Japan, from the 1970s to the present day, through the work of notable photographers selected in two categories, figures and landscapes. Naturally, it is impossible to obtain a fundamental understanding of photographic expression developed through diverse methods and approaches through these two categories alone. Therefore, the work of the 23 photographers gathered here does not fully represent Japanese photographic expression since the 1970s, but we do not intend to trace its entire historical development through the categories of figure and landscape. Looking at each of the images gathered here, one will understand that these categories are quite loose and flexible. The purpose of this exhibition is to present a synthesis of things that arise from the group of images selected through the tentatively established categories of figure and landscape, to highlight the condition of the age and the state of the photographers’ gaze.
