“California Employment Law Update

Morgan Lewis lawyers Barbara Fitzgerald, Karen Cho, and Nancy Yamaguchi will present a webinar for members and friends of the Japan America Society of Southern California, providing an overview of hot topics and emerging trends in California employment law.

They will discuss how employers can navigate the challenging areas of wage and hour, independent contractors, discrimination claims, and arbitration laws that affect the California workplace, and address best practices when reopening in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Barbara A. Fitzgerald represents employers in all areas of employment law. She has over 30 years of experience advising Asian, North American, and European employers in California. Her practice emphasizes litigation, primarily the defense of claims for wrongful termination, workplace harassment and retaliation, employment discrimination, and individual and class wage and hour claims. Barbara’s clients include companies in pharmaceuticals, luxury brands, entertainment, health services, financial services, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and transportation.


Karen Cho


Senior Associate, Morgan Lewis

Karen Y. Cho represents management in all types of employment disputes ranging from single-plaintiff litigation to class and collective action matters. Karen has experience litigating and trying cases in both state and federal courts, and in arbitration and administrative settings. She advises employers on a broad range of employment law matters, including those involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, failure to accommodate, wrongful termination, breach of contract, and wage and hour compliance. Karen also regularly provides workplace training and conducts internal investigations for companies from startups to the Fortune 500.

Nancy Yamaguchi advises technology companies across the world on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, strategic and venture capital investments, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and technology transactions. She also counsels clients, especially those in Asia, on US regulatory compliance related to technology investments and transfers.  Her expertise includes latest US legislative developments regarding Hong Kong related economic sanctions.  Her clients include companies in the semiconductor, automotive, banking, IT, and software industries, among others. She also advises clients on operations of technology businesses and technology assets around the world, including intellectual property, labor/employment and litigation matters, collaborating with specialists in these areas.
