JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles invites you to ‘KESHIKI | The Landscape Within | Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from the Brodfuehrer Collection.’ The exhibition showcases the incredible diversity of styles and techniques found in Japan’s contemporary ceramic work, with a focus on regionality and keshiki, or ‘landscape.’ Keshiki refers to the glaze, scorch markings, cracks and indentations on the surface of ceramics, and has long been celebrated by Japanese artists and collectors as adding beauty, depth and value to individual works.
Gordon Brodfuehrer is a pioneering collector who has played a key role in developing contemporary Japanese ceramics collections at premier institutions across the country.
Since the sixteenth century, “admiring the keshiki” has evolved into a particularly Japanese way of looking at ceramics. We hope visitors will spend time with the sixty plus ceramic pieces in this exhibition, and discover their own, personal keshiki within.
