California’s budgets are predicted to run surpluses through the end of the decade according to the Legislature’s nonpartisan fiscal analyst, as long as the economy remains stable. California, with the 8th largest economy in the world and the largest Gross State Product in the nation, will have to continue to invest and manage its money wisely to maintain that stability. 

As Treasurer, Chiang will be tasked with administering the sale of state bonds and promoting the state’s fiscal health to Wall Street credit ratings agencies. He will also continue to serve on the boards for CalPERS and CalSTRS, two of the nation’s largest public pension funds, which are facing unfunded liabilities of approximately $57 billion and $70 billion, respectively. Will California be able to maintain its financial stability in the face of debt, rising pension costs, and an unsteady economic recovery?

The Hon. John Chiang will discuss his plans for his term as California State Treasurer and the most pressing issues facing the office. The California State Treasurer is the state’s lead asset manager, banker and financier. Previously, Chiang served on the California State Board of Equalization from 1997-2006 and as California State Controller from 2006-2014.
